Bruins Fans, brace yourselves! The Boston Bruins' recent loss to the Detroit Red Wings wasn't just a defeat; it was a situation that sparked a surprising move by Coach Marco Sturm. The Bruins lost with a score of 5-4 on the road.
The Bruins found themselves in a tough spot early on, trailing 3-0 less than two minutes into the second period. The Red Wings extended their lead to 5-2 just under four minutes into the third period. That's when Sturm made a bold decision: he pulled Jeremy Swayman, the Bruins' star goalie, and put Joonas Korpisalo in net.
But here's where it gets controversial... It wasn't about Swayman's performance, according to Sturm. Instead, the coach wanted to send a message to the team, who, in his view, weren't playing well in front of their goalie.
“It almost wasn’t fair to (Swayman) because of the way the team played in front of him,” Sturm explained. “Maybe he could have saved one or two, but he’s been so good for us that I wanted to get Joonas in there.” This is a move that can be seen in different ways. Some might agree with the coach's tough love approach, while others might think it's unfair to the goalie.
Swayman's stats for the game were 18 saves out of 23 shots. Korpisalo, who came in relief, stopped all 9 shots he faced.
The Bruins and Red Wings had been playing a back-to-back series, with Boston winning the previous game 3-2 in a shootout.
This loss put the Bruins at a record of 15-13-0, pushing them out of a playoff spot.
The Bruins will be back in action on Thursday, playing at home against the St. Louis Blues.
What do you think of Coach Sturm's decision? Was it the right move to send a message to the team, or should Swayman have stayed in the net? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
