North Tyneside Council's Blunders Result in Child Missing Three School Terms
A mayor has extended her sincere apologies to the family of a child with special needs who endured over a year without adequate education. The Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman revealed that the child, referred to as Child Y, had missed out on several months of education, including a significant portion of their GCSE year, due to the mistakes made by North Tyneside Council.
The Ombudsman's report detailed that the local authority had neglected to provide the necessary equipment required for the child to engage with their classmates from home. As a result, the council was ordered to compensate the family with £5,900.
Mayor Karen Clark expressed her regret, emphasizing the implementation of new due diligence processes to prevent similar incidents in the future. This incident underscores the critical importance of ensuring that all children, especially those with special needs, receive the necessary support and resources to thrive in their educational journey.
