No Assassination Attempt on Naval Officer: Police Debunk Rumors (2025)

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has refuted claims of an assassination attempt on Nigerian Navy officer, Lt. Ahmed Yerima, in Abuja. The reports, which circulated on news outlets and social media, alleged that Yerima was trailed by unidentified men in black, traveling in unmarked Hilux vans without number plates. The pursuit, according to the reports, began around 6:30 p.m. at the NIPCO filling station along the Kubwa Expressway and continued to Gado Nasco Way. However, the police command's spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, described the claim as entirely false, stating that no such incident was reported or recorded within the FCT. The command urged the public to disregard the false information and avoid spreading unverified claims that could cause unnecessary panic. The reports had sparked speculation linking the alleged incident to Yerima's recent confrontation with FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, over a disputed land allocation in Abuja. The minister accused the retired military chief of illegal development and confronted Yerima for allegedly assaulting personnel of the Federal Capital Development Authority. The public debate that ensued highlighted differing opinions on the matter, with some arguing that the minister was fulfilling his constitutional duty and others supporting Yerima's actions. Military veterans rallied behind the officer, demanding an apology from Wike and rejecting any calls for his discipline. The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Abubakar, further assured that no lawful military personnel would face sanctions.
