Is Jorge Masvidal gearing up for a sensational return to the octagon, potentially at a history-making event? The combat sports world is buzzing with rumors, and at the center of it all is the enigmatic Jorge Masvidal. Speculation is rife about his comeback, particularly concerning the highly anticipated UFC White House event, tentatively slated for June 14th.
Rumors have been swirling, especially regarding the potential involvement of former two-division champion Conor McGregor, who has expressed his desire to be part of the card. After UFC CEO Dana White dismissed a potential grudge match between McGregor and Michael Chandler, 'The Notorious' stated he's open to fighting anyone at the White House event.
This statement has ignited a firestorm of speculation, including the possibility of a showdown with Masvidal. In a recent interview with MMA Junkie, Masvidal was directly asked about the McGregor rumors. His response? A carefully guarded silence.
"You never know, right?" Masvidal teased. "Shit, give them what they want, not what they expect. I can say some big news. I have some fight news coming soon and it’s very big news and I can’t deny or confirm what you just said. You’ve got to just let the chips fall where they may, but definitely some big news headed towards the MMA community."
Masvidal's last UFC fight was in 2023, a loss to Gilbert Burns at UFC 287, marking his fourth consecutive defeat, which led to his retirement announcement. However, he returned to competition in July 2024 for a boxing match against Nate Diaz, losing by majority decision. Beyond this, the 41-year-old has remained active in combat sports as a promoter for various organizations, including the bare-knuckle promotion, Gamebred Fighting Championship.
He also revealed that he's still training, though he wouldn't specify the purpose. "Combination of things," Masvidal explained. "I can’t—Some of it is like, Level 5-only access, so I can’t really say too much, but I am training for something big, I can say that."
But here's where it gets controversial... Masvidal made it crystal clear that if he were to return to MMA, it would be for one reason only: to fight at the White House.
"I wouldn’t mind getting out there and fcking doing my thing on the White House," Masvidal stated. "That’s the only fight I come back for. Whether it’s the fcking guy that sells fcking the cheap whiskey or fcking ‘Joe Blow,’ I don’t care, it’s the White House. I really don’t give a f*ck. I’m very, very easy to negotiate for in this particular fight."
Adding fuel to the fire, he confidently proclaimed, "I’m Trump’s favorite fighter, that’s all you’ve got to keep in mind. Just remember that at all times."
When pressed for specifics about a potential comeback, Masvidal remained tight-lipped, hinting that an announcement might be imminent.
"I can’t deny or confirm any of that right now, but maybe hopefully soon I can," Masvidal said. "I don’t know, I would want to say soon. Like, maybe 10 days, something like that, I should have more confirmation on it."
And this is the part most people miss... The potential for a high-profile fight at the White House adds a unique layer of intrigue to Masvidal's possible return. Could this be the ultimate spectacle, a clash of titans under the most unusual circumstances? Or is it all just hype? What do you think? Do you believe Masvidal will return?
