Jack Punswick, a swimmer with an unwavering spirit, has been awarded the 2025 Swammy for the Heart of a Champion. His journey is a testament to resilience and determination, both in and out of the pool. In 2024, Punswick faced a formidable challenge when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a battle he fought with unwavering dedication into 2025.
A lifelong baseball player, Punswick's story began when he was cut from his high school team during his sophomore year. This led him to discover swimming, joining the Overland Park-Blue Valley West High School team. His talent was evident as he won the Kansas 6A state title in the 100 breast as a junior, setting a time of 57.94. He quickly rose through the ranks, qualifying for the USA Swimming Futures Championships and Speedo Sectionals.
However, his journey took an unexpected turn when he began feeling unwell during his first futures meet in Minneapolis. He was diagnosed with pneumonia and later discovered swollen lymph nodes, which were confirmed as stage II Hodgkin's Lymphoma just over a week into September. Despite the diagnosis, Punswick's determination remained steadfast.
He continued to train multiple times a week, even after starting chemotherapy in September 2024, and swam through late December of that year. His goal was to defend his state title in the 100 breast. Punswick's unwavering commitment to his sport was further showcased when he canceled recruiting trips and decided to take a gap year before college, choosing not to race until he qualified for the Kansas 6A State Championships in February 2025.
Despite his cancer treatment, Punswick's determination paid off. He finished second in the 100 breast at the championships, touching in at 59.63, just behind his club teammate, Lincoln Mainelli. His remarkable effort earned him the 2025 National High School Spirit of Sport Award, recognizing his exceptional spirit and dedication to the sport.
Overland Park-Blue Valley West also benefited from Punswick's unwavering spirit, winning their third straight KSHSAA 6A title. In April, Punswick was declared cancer-free with clear scans, marking the end of his battle with cancer.
This past October, Punswick committed to the University of Southern Indiana in the Summit League, just over a year after his diagnosis. His story serves as an inspiration to athletes and individuals facing adversity, demonstrating that the heart of a champion lies in the ability to overcome challenges and emerge stronger.
