Freezing temperatures threaten to disrupt the beautiful game, but one team has a clever plan to keep the match on! Lincoln City is taking extraordinary measures to ensure their televised match against Peterborough United goes ahead, despite the biting cold. The solution? A heated dome, a technological marvel designed to protect the pitch from freezing.
This innovative approach involves a massive cover that blows heated air underneath, effectively preventing the ground from turning into a frozen wasteland. Grounds manager Liam Markie expressed his confidence in the dome, which is borrowed from the English Football League (EFL).
The weekend forecast predicts temperatures plummeting to as low as -5°C (23°F). But Mr. Markie remains optimistic, stating, "We should be absolutely fine for Sunday." He even has a handy "little app" on his phone to monitor the temperature and moisture levels of the playing surface, ensuring the pitch is in prime condition.
The EFL stepped in to provide this solution because the club's usual frost sheet covers aren't equipped to handle such extreme cold. As Mr. Markie explained, "They will work to about minus three or four, but we've got no daytime temperatures - I think the highest we are getting to is two degrees."
The dome is scheduled to remain in place until Sunday morning, just before the Sky Bet League One game kicks off at 12:00 GMT.
But here's where it gets controversial... the cold snap has already caused issues elsewhere. Boreham Wood's top-of-the-table National League fixture against York City was postponed due to a frozen pitch. The fifth-tier match between Scunthorpe United and Sutton United has also been called off.
The Met Office, the UK's national weather service, has issued multiple weather warnings for snow and ice, highlighting the severity of the cold snap.
