Casey Stoner's Unique Mindset: Why He Never 'Defended' His MotoGP Titles (2026)

EXCLUSIVE: The Unique Mindset That Led Casey Stoner to MotoGP Glory

Casey Stoner, a two-time champion of the MotoGP World Championship, takes an intriguing stance on his racing career: he claims he never truly 'defended' a title, despite having clinched two championships. This perspective is particularly compelling when you consider the context of his title reigns. In 2008, Stoner was unseated by the legendary Valentino Rossi, and after an unfortunate injury that left him with a broken right ankle during the Indianapolis race in 2012, he saw Jorge Lorenzo snatch the title away from him.

However, Stoner firmly believes that he was not in a position of defending anything at all. Instead, he views each new racing season as a fresh start, devoid of any lingering pressures or expectations from previous years, apart from the change in his racing number that he adopted following each championship victory.

"I think my approach to racing might be a bit different from most riders. To me, I’ve never really felt like I was ‘defending’ a title—it’s always been about starting a new championship with a clean slate," Stoner shared in an interview with Crash.net, which was arranged to promote his role as a key character in the upcoming video game, Ride 6.

He elaborated, saying, "People often talk about the concept of defending a championship, but the reality is that everyone begins the season with zero points. It’s essentially a race to accumulate the most points by the end of the season. So, I treated each race individually. I never viewed anyone as a ‘final boss’ to conquer. If a rider was performing exceptionally well, sure, they became the one to beat, but that didn’t shape my mindset going into the new season.

Every new season brings changes—bikes evolve, teams may switch machines during the off-season, and you can never predict what surprises lie ahead, which is part of what makes the sport so thrilling.

Even though I might be considered the 'final boss' in this game, I never regarded myself in that way. Instead, it's just another hurdle to tackle—similar to how I approached my racing career."

Stoner emphasized that he never saw himself as the central figure of a racing storyline, nor did he view his competitors that way. "I never experienced the emotional connection that many riders often do, like racing against their heroes or standing out as uniquely different from the others," he reflected.

"For me, the primary challenge was always internal. It was about pushing myself to extract more from both myself and my bike. Yes, competing against others is necessary, and understanding the dynamics with my closest rivals is important, but I never perceived them as being above me.

There were definitely moments where I believe I could have managed situations better, but ultimately, it came down to the choices I made and my actions. Therefore, my greatest rival was myself—overcoming personal obstacles, adapting my riding style, and figuring out how to align my performance with that of my competitors.

Since I focused less on any specific rider, I was able to continually adapt, grow stronger, and learn from my rivals, which I believe significantly enhanced my career overall."

Ride 6 is set to launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on February 12.
