Harare's Central Business District: A Haven for Imposter Police Officers
A former municipal police officer, Farai Garachani, has been exposed for impersonating a parking attendant in Harare's CBD, allegedly extorting money from residents. This incident highlights a growing concern about rogue elements within the city's police force.
The Harare City Council issued a statement, warning residents about Garachani's dismissal earlier this year for similar extortion offenses. The council emphasized the need for vigilance and encouraged residents to report any incidents to the police and municipal authorities.
Journalists and residents alike have reported encounters with imposter parking attendants. Hopewell Chin'ono, a journalist, shared a story of a friend who was approached by two men claiming to be parking attendants. They threatened to call a towing truck if she refused to let them into her car to 'pay a fine'.
This scam involves criminal gangs posing as parking attendants, forcing their way into vehicles and instructing drivers to go to council offices, where they rob them. Chin'ono advised against allowing anyone into one's car and urged residents to be cautious.
The council's statement also stressed the importance of proper identification and uniform wear for municipal police officers to prevent such impersonation. This incident serves as a reminder for residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
The city's authorities are now on high alert, aiming to arrest and prosecute the suspects involved. Residents are encouraged to come forward with any information they may have to help bring these imposter police officers to justice.
