Bizarre Airport Incident: Car Speeds on Taxiway Near Planes at John Wayne Airport! (2026)

A security guard on contract was rushed to the hospital after driving onto an airport taxiway and zooming past aircraft, authorities said.

At about 1:12 p.m. on December 8, the guard assigned to a security checkpoint drove a vehicle onto a taxiway at high speed, according to a statement from John Wayne Airport spokesperson AnnaSophia Servin.

Video obtained by ABC7 shows a white sedan racing along the taxiway with planes nearby. The outlet also reported that an air traffic controller instructed a Southwest flight to “hold position,” and the controller described the moment as a “high-speed chase on the taxiway.”

Orange County sheriff’s deputies detained the driver shortly after the incident and called for a medical evaluation from the Orange County Fire Authority. The individual was assessed on the scene and appeared to be experiencing a possible medical emergency, Servin said.

The driver was hospitalized and later suspended from his job, according to the airport. Airport operations continued as scheduled.

What happened next remains under investigation as authorities review how the incident unfolded and whether additional safety protocols were affected or breached.

If you’re just catching up, this event raises questions about security procedures at major airports and the measures in place to prevent unauthorized access to active taxiways—and what steps are taken when an emergency medical situation coincides with air traffic operations.

What do you think should be the immediate priorities for airports in preventing similar incidents, and how should agencies balance rapid security responses with ongoing airport operations? Share your thoughts in the comments.
