A thrilling start to the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana! Biniam Girmay, in his dream debut with NSN Cycling, snatched a narrow victory in the opening stage, showcasing his talent and determination. But here's where it gets controversial...
Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe and Remco Evenepoel put on an incredible display of power and strategy, thanks to Giulio Pellizzari's late attack. The stage was a true test of strength and tactics, with Red Bull taking control late in the race, up the challenging Cat 3 climb, Puerto de los Madroños.
The race unfolded with an early attack by Mats Wenzel and Diego Pablo Sevilla, joined by Danny van der Tuuk and Lewis Adam. Despite a brief attempt by Hamish Armitt to bridge the gap, the race settled into a tense holding pattern for over 100 kilometers. The classified climb, Puerto de los Madroños, proved to be a pivotal moment, with a visible acceleration in the peloton as they descended towards the summit.
Van der Tuuk claimed the opening bonus at the top, but the team cars passing the break made it clear that the strongest riders were closing in fast. Shortly after, the last two survivors, Wenzel and Sevilla, were caught, leaving Red Bull to make their move.
Red Bull's aggressive tactics on the Madroños climb reduced the front group to just 30 riders, including Evenepoel and former winner Aleksandr Vlasov. Notable absences included João Almeida and Mads Pedersen. Evenepoel's time bonus and Pellizzari's late attack put their rivals in a tough spot. Should they chase, they risk giving Evenepoel an easy ride to the top spot, or wait and face the threat of Pellizzari.
The chasers opted to wait, swelling their numbers, and an intense pursuit of Pellizzari began. Despite the flat roads, it took much longer than expected to reel him in, with Bahrain Victorious, Ineos Grenadiers, and NSN all contributing to the chase. Red Bull's strategic blocking added to the drama, but eventually, the powerful Italian was caught.
Ineos' Ben Turner initiated the sprint, closely followed by Girmay and his former teammate, Marit. Marit's attempt to overtake the Eritrean star was unsuccessful, as Girmay's top speed proved unbeatable.
NSN's second win of the season continues their impressive streak, which began with a stage victory at the Tour Down Under. However, as the overall battle intensifies on Thursday, Girmay's lead is expected to be short-lived.
Stage two, a rolling time trial from Carlet to Alginet, will be a crucial day for the general classification, even with the short distance. With Evenepoel in the mix and Red Bull's morale high after their triumphs in Mallorca, the main question is how much of an advantage the Belgian will gain over his rivals, potentially securing his third individual victory in less than a week.
