Alex Cuthbert's Shocking NFL Trial Confession: Rugby Star's Failed Switch to American Football (2026)

The NFL's Alluring Switch: A Tale of Two Lions

In a recent interview, former Welsh rugby star Alex Cuthbert revealed a fascinating chapter in his career, one that almost saw him follow in the footsteps of his fellow Lion, Louis Rees-Zammit, across the Atlantic to the NFL.

Cuthbert, now 35 and retired from rugby, shared his thoughts on Rees-Zammit's journey, describing it as a "win-win" situation. He believes that Rees-Zammit's time in the NFL transformed him into a more professional athlete, a view that many might find controversial. But here's where it gets interesting: Cuthbert himself had a trial for the NFL almost a decade ago, and he's not afraid to admit that it didn't go as planned.

"He [Rees-Zammit] knows his unique selling point - his speed," Cuthbert said. "When he went to the NFL, it was an incredible opportunity for a young talent. To play in the NFL at such a young age is a dream come true. Even if he wasn't getting much game time with Wales at the time, the experience was invaluable."

Cuthbert's own trial, however, was a different story. He attempted a "little trial" in 2017, on a day off before a Six Nations game, which he described as "a bit mental."

"I was going for a tight end position, and I did terribly," he confessed. "The 40-yard dash, the jumps - I just wasn't at my best. I was out of contract, and it was a crazy time to try something new."

And this is the part most people miss: the NFL's intense training and discipline. Cuthbert believes that Rees-Zammit's time in the league would have taught him a lot about professionalism and dedication. "NFL athletes are on another level," he said. "The way they train, the precision, it's incredible."

So, what do you think? Is the NFL a viable option for rugby players? Could the intense training and discipline of the NFL benefit rugby players, or is it a step too far? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
