The Libertarian Party of Oakland County (LPOC) voted today to thank L. Brooks Patterson by giving him their annual award, "The Oakie", for his help in growing Libertarian Party membership.
LPOC Chair, Gary Bora, stated that, "Patterson's recent announcement that he wants to 'reign in the far right' is going to help us even further. The group that Patterson refers to as the 'far right' are really just average citizens who think that the career politician is a bit too full of himself, and they are eager to reduce the size and power of government to keep Patterson from running amuck."
One of Patterson's more noteworthy converts to the Libertarian Party is former County Executive candidate Paul Champion. Champion joined the Libertarian Party after receiving a letter in which Patterson called Champion an asshole.
Champion notes, "the reason so few people in Oakland County voted Republican is obvious. With people like L. Brooks Patterson and John Engler being represented as model Republicans, their core constituency, i.e. people who want smaller government, are staying at home. People who want smaller government should look into the Libertarian Party - these people mean what they say."
The LPOC gives their annual award at their January general membership meeting, this year being held on January 24, 2001, 7:30PM at Sila's restaurant in Berkley. County Executive Patterson has not yet announced whether he will attend in person to receive his award.

The Libertarian Party of Oakland County meets on the second Wednesday of every month at 6:30 PM at Sila's Restaurant, 4033 W. 12 Mile, 2 blocks east of Greenfield, in Berkley for dinner and we begin our business meeting at 7:30 PM. Please check Upcoming Events for additional events.
